Affectionately known as “Mr. Cowboy”, his name was the first inscribed in the “Ring of Honor” above Texas Stadium.
Bob Lilly was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1980 and he was ranked #10 on The Sporting News’ list of the top 100 Greatest Football Players.
This is his memory of a sack that caused a 29 yard loss in the Dallas Cowboys Super Bowl XI victory:
“It was near halftime and we were in a fierce game against Miami during Super Bowl VI. We felt they were going to pass the ball on this down and we called a double stunt between our defensive tackles and ends. With the tackles going first I split the gap between the offensive guard and tackle making a clean escape into the Dolphins back field. Bob Griese saw me and started to run to his right, but defensive end Larry Cole had also made a clean escape on the left side of our defensive line. Griese saw him and tried to drop deeper to gain time to throw the ball away. Larry Cole and I had him corraled and I caught him for a 29 yard sack.”

By far, the single most memorable sack in SB history. Some may argue it was the safety when the Steelers caught Frank Tarkenton a couple of years later for the very first safety in SB history. But this sack put the Cowboys in control of the game and ended Miami’s momentum.
I agree, this sack totally changed the game, most Cowboy fans don’t even know who Bob Lilly is which is a shame — this play turned the tables on Miami and got the Cowboys their first Super Bowl win.
