This year was the 25th Anniversary of one of the greatest plays in NFL history, “The Catch”. The 49ers were trailing 27-21 on January 10, 1982 versus the Dallas Cowboys. They got down to the 6 yard line with 58 seconds left. The ball was supposed to be thrown to Freddie Solomon but Freddie fell down on the play.
We got the rare chance to sit down with Super Bowl Legend Joe Montana as he wrote his memory of The Catch for our Series II Joe Montana Memothentic called “The Catch”.
“The Catch was a play designed to throw to Freddie Solomon not Dwight Clark. Dwight was to set a screen for Freddie and I would throw him the ball as he came off the screen. We had scored once on this play already in this game. This time Freddie fell down and Dwight, never having been thrown a ball on this play, was just going thru his assignment when he realized what had happened. He slid back along the end line just as it was drawn up and made a great catch. I didn’t see it because I got knocked down.
