The Story of the Memothentic How The Ultimate Sports Collectible Was Born By Kelly Johns
One of the most emotional shots of NFL legend Jerry Rice was taken in the end zone at Stanford Stadium of all places, with thousands of 49ers fans cheering wildly in the background.
And it was good that they finally had something to cheer about. San Francisco had been devastated by an earthquake on Oct. 17, 1989, an event that gripped the nation and interrupted the Bay Area World Series between the A's and the Giants. The 49ers were forced out of Candlestick Park and into Stanford Stadium while engineers assessed damage and the city launched and unprecedented recovery effort.
Flash forward 16 years to Sept. 4, 2005, the day before Jerry retired from the NFL. We'd invited him out Riverside, Calif., for a private autograph signing at the historic Mission Inn. Jerry signed a few 8X10s of the end zone shot at Stanford Stadium. This shot captured the essence of Jerry Rice, his endurance, professionalism and athleticism. It also captured the excitement and extravagance of the NFL and brought back memories of the terrible event that forced the game against the Patriots to be played at Stanford.
I mentioned to Jerry that I thought this was the best shot I'd ever seen of him. He reminisced about that game, talking about the earthquake and telling me he'd never forget it or the moment he experienced in Stanford Stadium.
Later, when we showed this photo to collectors, we'd retell the story as Jerry remembered it. All sports fans who were alive in 1989 remember where they were when the earthquake struck, how they felt at the time and how sports helped a grieving city and nation heal.
Through Jerry's retelling of events in 2005, the ultimate collectible was born. A piece that transcends all memorabilia. Memorable moments, remembered by the people who made them happen, in their own writing. All of this captured in an elegant frame to forever memorialize the moment and the personal memory.
The Memothentic allows collectors to relive moments from the perspective of their favorite celebrity -- and what they were thinking about during famous moments of their career.
The Memothentic is "The Way They Remember It."
